Child-Led Supports to Replace Harmful Interventions

…what we do doesn’t matter nearly as much as how kids experience what we do.” –Alfie Kohn

In Child-Led Supports to Replace Harmful Interventions, Lauren highlights some of the ways providers and educators in Early Intervention and Special Education intervene in a child’s life that may seem commonplace and benign but are harmful to the child and their familial relationships. Lauren explores why and how these practices can be damaging to esteem and relationships, then gives concrete and practical advice for following the child’s lead to foster empowerment, acceptance, and inclusion.

Runs 90 minutes or 120 minutes with group breakout activity.

“We can best help children learn, not by deciding what we think they should learn and thinking of ingenious ways to teach it to them, but by making the world, as far as we can, accessible to them, paying serious attention to what they do, answering their questions — if they have any — and helping them explore the things they are most interested in.”–John Holt
